Dog Study at Mills – Questions

Interviews with people on the street about their dogs:

  • Do you think your dog is intelligent?
  • What if he could be tested?
  • Would you want to know just how intelligent he is?
  • How do you think that would help relationship with your dog/his behavior?

Interviews with TA and Prof. leading program: (just a general idea of questions to ask)

  • Ask them each to introduce themselves
  • To Prof:
    • Would you please describe this study to me ?
    • I’m not a psychologist or a scientist of any kind. Would you please explain Piaget’s theory to me, in layman’s terms?  (Piaget for Dummies)
    • How did you get involved?
    • How long has it been going on?
    • [Refer to the 6-page guide about the study]
    • I’m not a scientist, or a psychologist: Would you explain “Piaget’s Object Permanence Theory” to me in layman’s language?
    • How do you take this theory, devised using human subjects, and apply it to dogs?
    • What can this test show us?

Short interviews with dog owners (& their dogs):

  • Ask them to tell me their first name and to introduce me to their dog
  • Why are you doing this?
  • Have you done this before?
  • What do you expect might happen?

Short interviews with dog owners (& their dogs):

  • Have you done this before?
  1. If yes:
    • Do you think your dog is learning something?
    • Or is this a no-brainer for him/her?
    • Do you think your dog enjoys this?

To dog:

  • “So what do you think about these tests? I see that you’ve done them before…?”
  • Add dog sounds here as appropriate: snuffling mic?, whimpers, barks, whatever I get, even if I don’t get anything
  1. If no
  • What do you think it will be like?
  • Are you nervous?
  • How do you think [dog’s name] will do?

Follow-up after testing:

To owners:

  • So how did you think it went?

To dogs:

  • So how did you think it went?

To facilitator:

  • So how did you think it went?
  • What did you learn from this test session?
  • So where does this data go? Who keeps it?
  • What happens next?

Back with Prof. & TA: Final questions

  • How does the data look? What did you learn from this particular trial?
  • What are the application(s) of your data?
  • What other work is currently being done in this subject area?
  • Are there other schools of thought on this topic?
  • Where and how is all of this data stored?
  • Is it available for any other researcher who needs this kind of data?
